On December 7, 1856, Michael Washington married Martha Jane Ross, daughter of John and Celia Evelyn Sutton Ross. Thirteen children were born to this union. During the War Between the States, he served with Co. G, 14th Georgia Infantry, The Yancy Independents. He was present at the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox.
