Wallace Murder Trial Begins

Opening statements were scheduled to begin at 9 o'clock this morning inWare Superior Court for the jury trial of Antonio Wallace, who is charged with the beating death of a Waycross man in October 2009.

Wallace is charged with malice murder and felony murder in the death of LeRoy O'Hara, 46, of Waycross, who died at Shand's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., a few hours after the beating took place.

A 12-member jury of eight men and four women, with two alternates, was empaneled Monday afternoon to hear the case before Judge Michael Boggs. Two other men were originally charged in the beating but according to court officials, their charges were later dropped.

In the initial report by Waycross police, the incident was detailed
as a beating at a convenience store in the 800 block of State Street. The victim was at the store when the men approached him and a disagreement occurred, police said. The men then "beat the victim down," police said. O'Hara was treated at the scene by Ware County Emergency Medical Service technicians and transported to Satilla Regional Medical Center by ambulance. He was then transferred to Shand's Jacksonville where he died from his injuries.

A Ware County grand jury returned an indictment against Wallace in November 2009, an indictment that charges him with malice murder and felony murder.

The indictment notes that Antonio Wallace beat O'Hara to death with his fists and kicked him with his feet.

Assistant District Attorney George Barnhill is scheduled to prosecute the case for the state.

Wallace is being represented by Blackshear attorney John Thigpen.

The trial is expected to last most of the day.
