MR. PREBLE DIED LAST EVENING.
-----------------------------
Was Nearly 86 Years of Age and One of Oldest Residents.
--------------------------------------------
ILL BUT A FEW WEEKS
-------------------
Born in Batavia, New York, Coming to Niles in 1855--Funeral Services Thursday Morning.
--------------------------------------------

James P. Preble was born in January, 1828, in Batavia, New York, and died at the home, one mile southeast of Niles. Monday evening at 9 o'clock. He is the last of a family of 10 children, six brothers and four sisters. The deceased came to Niles in 1855, making his home at the homestead in which he passed away, having lived there continuously.

On April 2, 1860, he united in marriage to Miss Lucinda Johnson of Elkhart, Ind., who still resides in the home adjoining Vernon Heights. She is a helpless invalid, having been afflicted for many years with rheumatism, and is 72 years old.

Besides the widow he is survived by two sons, Edward Francis, a superintendent of schools, spending his vacations at the farm home, and Walter F. of Burke, South Dakota; also, one daughter, Charlotte, who has been at home with her parents for the past five years.

Mr. Preble was unusually free from illness nearly his entire lifetime, and except for the fact that an accident made it necessary for him to use crutches during the past three years, he had been remarkably strong and active until only a few weeks ago, when he was taken with his final illness. He was nearly 86 years of age and his remarkable preservation was wonderful. He had lead a clean, good life, was always cheery, kind and charitable. He was, perhaps, one of the best known of the older Niles citizens, and had an especially large circle of friends.

Although not affliated with any particular church denomination, he was always ready to do a kindness for a neighbor and to help out wherever and whenever it was in his power to do so. Many are extending the bereaved family their sincere sympathy.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, word being awaited from the son in South Dakota regarding further arrangements.

Niles Daily Star, July 1, 1913

Note: The death certificate states he died on July 1, 1913 and that the doctor last saw him on June 30, 1913. His father, John Preble, and mother, Laura 'Copwell' are also on the death certificate (Indexing Project (Batch) #B02571-0; System Michigan-EASy; Source Film #1954721). Because the Niles Daily Star article was dated July 1, 1913 and also states that he died on Monday evening at 9 o'clock, the date of death on this memorial is being reported as June 30, 1913, which is how all of our private family records list it. The Marriage License shows the bride, Lucinda Johnson, with a birth date of 1842, instead of 1841. The groom's name is transcribed incorrectly as J. F. Beble, instead of J. P. Preble. His birth date is given as 1840, instead of 1828; and the place of his birth is transcribed as 'Nales, Benion, Michigan', which should be 'Niles, Berrien, Michigan'. They were married on April 2, 1860 in Edwardsburg, Cass County, Michigan. This marriage license needs to be verified.
