Jonas was the son of Matthew and Ruth Ball. His siblings were: Aaron, John, Matthew Jr., Daniel, Julia Ann, Lydia, Caleb, Mary, Anna, Susan, Susannah, and John W.

Jonas married Amy Archer on 15 September 1818 in Union Township, Monroe County, Ohio. She was the daughter of James Archer and Rebecca Enochs Archer.

Jonas and Amy were the parents of twelve children---four boys and eight girls.

Jonas served in the War of 1812. He was a Private, a member of Captain William Ford's Company of the Maryland Militia. He was a substitute for George Shaw. He was discharged 17 July 1813.

After the war he served for a time as Monroe County Commissioner.
