Rev. Leonard S. Burchfield of McCune Road, Cochranton (Canal Township) passed away at 7:55 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Sugar Creek Station following a period of declining health. He was 95.

He was born in Geneva on Dec. 18, 1918, a son of the late Jerome and Alice Loper Burchfield. In 1938 he married the former Mae Randall, who preceded him in death in 1983. On May 26, 1984, he subsequently married the former Evelyn Cole, who survives. Leonard was a member of Canal Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church. He had an extensive career in the ministry, serving with the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Connection, having been granted his ministerial license in 1945 at which time he was serving as the pastor of the Punxsutawney AWM Church. He then went on to serve in full-time ministry at Barkley AWM Church, Homer City, East Conneaut AWM Church, Conneaut, Ohio, Greenwood AWM Church, Cochranton, it was during this time that he was ordained as an elder within the connection. Leonard continued to serve as a pastor at North Salem AWM Church, Greenville, Hillsdale AWM Church, Akron Maple Valley AWM Church, Akron, Ohio, Penn Run AWM Church, Penn Run, Cottage Hill AWM Church New Bethlehem, West Middlesex AWM Church, Fairmont AWM Church Fairmont, W.Va. Following his service at Titusville AWM Church he retired from active ministry. During the period of 1967 to 1974 and from 1979 until his death, he was involved in evangelism work throughout the AWM conference.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn, he is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Fitzgerald and her husband, Arnold, of Titusville; a granddaughter, Heather Rand of Titusville; three great-grandchildren, David, Danae and Stephen Rand of Titusville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mae; two sisters, Helen Vernon and Mildred (Dot) McEntire; and two brothers, Ronald Burchfield and Victor Burchfield.

Friends may call at Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., Perry Highway, Sheakleyville, on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Canal Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church, Deckards Run Road, Utica, with Rev. William M. Cope and Rev. Robert Luther officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Anderson Cemetery, Greenwood Township.
