MEMORIES OF STEVE ESTERLY

• I remember the Impala being full and we went through the drive thru at Moby Dick. All Steve ordered was one hushpuppy. They kept asking if he wanted anything else and in one of his voices he only wanted a hushpuppy. We pull up, we're all trying to not laugh too much and he drives around the building and did it again. LMAO – might have had to be there of course
• Hot, Fresh, Blueberry Muffins. I don't even remember what started it but he would love to ask drive thrus if they had any.
• I was driving myself to my high school graduation with my best friend Felicia when suddenly someone's face is practically inside my car. I don't know how we didn't wreck! Some of them were in a van and he was stretched out the passenger side.
• Steve, James and I went to The Vogue to see The Wall. They got up and went to the bathroom but I didn't know it. All I know is that when he started shaving his eyebrows, I took off and ran out and into street tripping. They had to come save me but I wouldn't let them watch the rest of the movie. We used to go to the midnight movies quite often.
• Had a big party at Steve's while parents were gone. I forget the guy's name but he fell asleep in the chair and Steve dipped his hand in warm water…….
• Steve used to make a certain face and it's in a picture my friend has. Kinda rolled lips in to show gums and get wide open eyes and flare his nose. When really little, I would make that face to my kids but where no one else could see me make it. They know it as the "Steve Esterly face" and now I do it to their kids too.
• Steve was not into sports and I didn't like football, so many Sundays we would spend our time together playing board games or just jamming while the other guys watched television.
• His dogs… I can't remember their names but the cutest Boston Terriers. We loved going to his house and playing with the dogs.
• I also remember his huge collection of Emmett Kelly figures and his Beatles collection. I didn't like the Beatles and still don't but somehow we stayed friends. Lol… I love John Lennon and never listen to him without thinking of Steve.
• Steve had two different Impalas. The best one was green and the huge wooden 8-track case he had in there left me hardly any room in the front seat. I was working while in high school down the street from Vine Records and 8-tracks were going because no more were being made. I remember going there almost daily and getting him some new ones. In fact, within the last couple of weeks, I talked to the guy who worked there that I ended up being friends with and he remembered me buying all those 8-tracks for a friend.
• Steve also used to work as garbage man and would find the coolest stuff. I couldn't imagine some of this stuff was being thrown away. Might be what helped inspire me to be a dumpster diver when I'm able and I love to go through the alleys when there is junk pick-up to see what I can find.

So much can be remembered and so much can be said. The most is that I cannot remember ever having a fight with Steve. I really can't. We would disagree but it would never get to name calling or anything like that. I know one of the first places I took my current husband was Sunset. He's not from here and didn't really know anyone in Louisville besides me. He had an aunt over in New Albany and had been here visiting when we met at the Tiger. Anyways, everyone at Sunset thought he had to be Steve's brother. I never even thought they looked alike and still don't but he got comments like that at the funeral too. I'm not sure what happened but seems like around 1990-1992 was about the last time I heard from him and I got a call about him being gone and I literally fell in the floor and cried. I'm an only child and I guess Steve was like the big brother I always wanted. I just feel bad that he maybe never knew how important he was to so many of us.
