Vittorio was the son of King Carlo Emmanuel III of Sardinia and his second wife, Princess Polixene Christin of Hesse-Rheinfels.

On 31 May 1750, he married Princess Maria-Antonia of Spain. They were the parents of 12 children-King Carlo-Emanuele IV, Maria-Elisabetta Carlotta (died young), Maria-Ana Karolina Gabriella, Maria-Guiseppina Luisa (Queen of France & Navarre), Amadeo-Alessandro (died young), Maria-Teresa (Queen of France & Navarre), King Vittorio-Emanuele I, Maria-Cristina Josefa (died young), Maurizio-Guiseppe, Maria-Carolina Antonia (Queen of Saxony), King Carlo-Felice I, and Guiseppe-Benedetto.

He died in the Moncalieri Castle, in Turin eleven years after Maria-Antoinia. He never remarried.
