Louisa Alley (1) first appeared on the 1860 US Census, living in Marion, Mercer County, Missouri with both of her parents, N B Alley (24) and Mary Alley (20), and her older brother Perry Alley (5). Both children were born in Missouri, while both of their parents were born in Indiana. N B (Napoleon Bonaparte) Alley was a farmer.

Louisa's mother Mary died in 1868 at only 30 years old, possibly related to the birth of Solomon, her youngest son , who was born Feb 20, 1868.

The 1870 US Census found Louisa Alley (11) living in Elm Creek, Saline County, Kansas, with her father, Napolean B Alley (38), a farmer and now a widower, and 4 siblings. They were Perry E Alley (15), Jedidaha Alley (7), Thomas E Alley (3) and Solomon Alley (2).

Louisa Alley married Othniel Barnhill in 1877 (per the 1900 US Census), after his first wife Nancy Jane Croco died in late 1876.

By the 1880 US Census they were living in Blue Hill, Mitchell County, Kansas with 7 children, 5 of whom were from Othniel's first marriage. In addition to Othniel H Barnhill (43), farmer, and Louisa Barnhill (21), the children were:
Edwin M Barnhill (19), Adelia A Barnhill (14), Faunes (sic - should be Frances) E Barnhill (12), Oliver M Barnhill (9), Rosa J Barnhill (7), Huron L Barnhill (b. Dec 1879) and Louisa E Barnhill (b. Dec 1879, m. Francis Marion Porter, b. Oct 1875 in Iowa). The 5 older children were, like their father, born in Indiana, while the twins were born in Kansas.

The 1900 US Census found the family living in Orange, Lincoln County, Kansas where O H Barnhill (63, b. May 1837 in Indiana) was still a farmer and still married to Louise Barnhill (41, b. Oct 1858 in Missouri). Louisa had borne 8 children, and they were all still alive in 1900. The 5 children living with them, all born in Kansas, were:
Hattie Barnhill (15, b. Jan 1885); Leo Barnhill (13, b. Nov 1886); Fanny Barnhill (11, b. Jan 1889); Mattie Barnhill (8, b. Oct 1891); and Edith Barnhill (3, b. Sep 1896).
