"WISEMAN'S FUNERAL IN CHURCH HE FOUNDED"
"Services of Pioneer Des Moines Minister Will Be Held Saturday Afternoon"

"The funeral of the Rev. W. A. Wiseman, pioneer minister in the Des Moines Methodist conference , who died yesterday morning following a stroke of paralysis, will be held at the Grace Methodist church, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The Rev. O. W. Fifer, pastor of the church, will officiate at the services.
"The Rev. Mr. Wiseman organized the Grace Methodist church congregation in a tent at Nineteenth and Crocker in NW when that part of the city was in the outskirts. The organization was the result of a series of evangelistic services.
"The Rev. Mr. Wiseman, who was born in Ohio, came into the Des Moines conference nearly forty years ago and was one of the oldest men in point of service in the conference. He had previous to his local conference work held important charges in the western part of the state. He leaves a wife and three children, William H. Wiseman, editor of the Daily Telegraph at Atlantic, Mrs. Jessie Wiseman Gibbs of Villisca, and Orrin G. Wiseman of Des Moines.
[The Des Moines Register and Leader,
Morning, August 11, 1911.]

The Reverend William Albert Wiseman has a delayed death certificate which is in the index: 911 18 10 M 77 00983.

Children of William Albert Wiseman and first wife:
William Herbert Wiseman
Jessie M. (Wiseman) Gibbs
Orrin Gould Wiseman

Wiseman, Albert lived at 813 1st Street, a clergyman, was a widower and living with his three children, Bestie H. (8) (M), Jessie M. (6) (F), Onain G. (4) (M), as well as a domestic, Anna E. Daily. Albert was born in Ohio, his children were born in Iowa. (1885 Iowa State Census)

Organization of Grace Methodist Episcopal church by W. A. Wiseman:

The Report of J W Webb, Presiding Elder of the Des Moines District, states and I quote "Under the earnest labors of Brother W A Wiseman, a new charge has been organized in Northwestern Des Moines with forty-eight members, hardly any of these coming from other city churches, yet a number of them are leading citizens of wealth and influence. A good subscription of over $1500 has been secured to erect a neat frame building on the lot previously secured by the first church trustees. The charge is to be called Grace M E church, and the enterprise is one of great promise for good. No one pastor can attend to all the Methodist interests in Western Des Moines, with its 25,000 population and rapidly increasing. We rejoice in the prospect of more help coming into the field and that, too, in a way and at such a distance as to be mutually helpful. The wisdom of the brethren of First church in placing location one mile away, but still in a thickly populated part of the city and rapidly filling with fine residences, is apparent to all who study the situation." [p46]
The ministerial report includes the following information: Grace Church, W.A. Wiseman, pastor, church just organized, no apportionment, one school, 15 officers and teachers, and 150 scholars of all ages. [p60] [Official Record of the Journal and Reports of the Twenty-sixth Session of the Des Moines Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, held at Wesley Church, Des Moines, Iowa, Sept. 17-22, 1885. M.D. Collins, Editor and Publisher. Des Moines: Daily Capital Book and Job Printing House. 1885.]

"There is quite a revival going on at Grace church, corner Nineteenth and Crocker streets. Ten or twelve were at the altar last night and new acquisitions are made to the church every week." [The Des Moines Daily News, Des Moines, Iowa, "The City", Wednesday January 6, 1886.]
"Rev. W. A. Wiseman and Mrs. Matilda Fletcher were married last evening, Rev. D. Webb, officiating." [Des Moines Daily News, Des Moines, Iowa, "Around Town", January 22, 1886.] (Wedding date January 21, 1886.)

Son of Walter Wiseman and Catherine Fern Miller. He married first to Alice Gertrude Morris, secondly to Mrs. Matilda Fletcher, and, although the obit above refers to a surviving spouse, he is listed as a widower on the census, just a year before his death.

William Wiseman married Mary Annett (Kickham) Haleel on 28 Apr 1911 in Valparaiso, Porter, Indiana. The marriage record has some errors in it, like his residence was Florida and hers was Chicago, but his birthdate and parents are correct. She is in the 1910 Census in Des Monies with her 12 year old daughter. Her occupation is bookkeeper for W.A. Wiseman.
