Francis McDowell, longtime St. Johnsbury painting contractor, died of complications from pneumonia Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the age of 88.

He was born in North Danville, Vermont on Sept. 4, 1923, the son of Francis McDowell, Sr. and Mildred Ainsworth.

During World War II Francis served in the Army in the South Pacific. After the war he married Janette Royer of Orleans on June 16, 1947 at St. Johnsbury. They had four children: Bruce, Brenda, Paula, and Denise. Janette died twenty eight years ago on July 25, 1984. Francis married Carol Grant in 1985 and made their home together in White River Jct.

Francis was well-known as a painting contractor all over the Northeast Kingdom. He and Janette operated the Summer St. skating rink in the 1960's.

Since Carol's passing in 2008, Fran came back to the area, living on Walker Rd. in East Burke. Barton, St. Jay, Orleans, Myrtle Beach, Fran enjoyed golfing anywhere and everywhere, especially with his son Bruce and the Wednesday afternoon group. Recently he was a member of Barton Country Club. In the past he was an active member at the St. Johnsbury Country Club where he started the 300 Club raffle.

Survivors include Bruce McDowell of St. Johnsbury, Brenda Beer and husband Dennis of Auburn NH, Paula Fairchild and husband Barry of Kempton PA, Denise McDowell and Den Riley of East Burke; 4 grandchildren: Emily Poginy, Abbie Fitzpatrick, Paula Beer, and Meghan Murphy; 4 great-grandchildren Michaela, Aidan, and Bryson Poginy, and Olivia Kolokowsky; two sisters: Mae Benedict and June Wold; one brother Douglas McDowell.
