Dr. Thomas Vinton Holmes, Jr.

SHREVEPORT, LA - Dr. Thomas Vinton Holmes, Jr., known affectionately to all as T.V., was the older of two sons born to Thomas Vinton Holmes, Sr. and Minnie Ola Cook on February 6, 1919 in Shreveport.

T.V. passed peacefully at home at the age of 90 on September 11, 2009. A longtime resident of Shreveport and a graduate of C.E. Byrd High School, T.V. attended college at Louisiana State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering in 1940. He remained an ardent supporter of LSU and all of its athletic programs throughout his lifetime.

T.V. proudly served our country in World War II in China, India, and Burma, rising in rank to Captain. He received a Bronze Service Star for duty in the Central Burma Combat Zone. After his discharge, T.V. served in various Active Reserve Army Units in the Shreveport area until 1969 when he retired from military service with the rank of Colonel

T.V. pursued various courses of study and vocation, ultimately receiving a second Bachelor of Science degree from Centenary College of Louisiana in 1955. He subsequently earned his dental degree in 1963 from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and settled down to practice general dentistry in his hometown until his retirement.

T.V. never lost his love of travel, photography, horticulture, reading and writing. He studied extensively and compiled his family's genealogy. He also wrote several travel logs of his experiences, and he especially enjoyed sharing his prose with family and friends. In his later years, T.V. enjoyed writing articles for various educational and political publications.

He was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church in Shreveport, where he had served faithfully on the Board of Directors and was always ready to share both his opinions and a kind word.

T.V. is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother Elmon Willis Holmes. He is survived by his sister-in-law Charlotte Noe Holmes Browning, his nephew Steven Thomas Holmes and wife Kacy, two great nephews Hunter Thomas Holmes and Alexander Christian Holmes and a new great niece Katherine Holland Holmes born in May of this year.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heritage Room at the First Baptist Church in Shreveport. Family and friends will gather for a memorial service in Frost Chapel at First Baptist on Sunday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Glen Flournoy, Sam Talbot, Cody White, Dr. Stan Wilkins, John Odom and Al Kessler. Hubert Joyner, Frank Crook and Beynon Cheesman will serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment, with military honors, will immediately follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
