Mrs. Ethel Bennett, 726 Gentry Place, suffered a heart attack while testifying in a mock trial at the Circuit Court room last night and died a few minutes later. The 63 year old woman was acting as the plaintiff for the University Law School trail practice class.
According to Carl C. Wheaton, class instructor, Mrs. Bennett had taken the witness stand about 8:30 o'clock. She was being cross -examined when she slumped and gasped for breath. The students first believed that she had fainted and carried her to a table.
When they could find no pulse beat, she was rushed to Boone County Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. Dr. Henry H. Sweets, Boone County Coroner, said that death was caused from a heart attack. No inquest will be held.
Mrs. Bennett had been under a doctor's care for high blood pressure for some time, but aside from that, her health was apparently good. She had broken her back in the Fall and remained in a cast until Christmas.
Born in Boone County to Hiram K. and Clara Devier, Mrs Bennett attended the University and Kirksville State Teachers College. She had taught English and Speech in Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Howard Winget, of Springfield, and Mrs. Carl Henry, Ashland; two brothers, Vernon Devier, Route 2, and Chester Devier, Hill City, Kansas; and two grandchildren, Michael Henry and Susan Winget.
The Rev. Robert Bartel will conduct funeral services at Parker's chapel tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock. Burial will be at Prairie Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers are W.H. Black, Ray Fenton, Ivan McCray, Robert Sublett, William Mosely and Estil Mosely
