James Blair
The subject of this sketch was born in Indiana, Dec 26th, 1826. In 1872 [sic] his father moved to Pike county, Ills, and in 1836 to Iowa, where the mother died, after which the family returned to Pike county, Ills., where they lived until '39, when they moved to Holt county and located on Sec 20, Tp 61, R 39, and on this farm Mr Blair lived and died. They were the first settlers in Benton township. James and his brother, Uriah, attended school in the first school house built in the township, which was a log one without any window. The first term of this school was taught by a man named Lattimore - he being known as the Yankee teacher, being from the east. In '49 James, Uriah and their father accompanied an expedition commanded by Gen Jas Craig, to California, and on the road the father died. James returned to Holt county in '50 and Uriah later the same year. James was married April 8, 1852 to Miss Emiline Jasper, and they had 12 children as a result of their union, the eldest and youngest have preceded their father in crossing the dark river.
Mr Blair died January 9th, 1895, the funeral taking place from the residence on the 10th, conducted by Elder Preston. The remains were interred in the Baldwin cemetery. - Mound City News
