He was married to Mary J. Robinson. William Franklin died of wounds received during the Civil War.

"Second Lieutenant William Franklin "Frank" Wells ... was a farmer and at age 32 enlisted 6 August 1861.  He was mustered in as a Private, promoted to Commissary Sergeant in November 1861, and transferred to the Field and Staff of the 29th Regiment.  He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 2 May 1862, and transferred back to this company.  He died at hospital at Chattanooga, Tennessee, 8 February 1863, cause of death not reported."
