MRS . HOSEA ATWOOD DIED AT COLLINS , IA .

Eldest Daughter, One of Ten Children of Mr . and Mrs . Marshall Stark, Founders of Sycamore, Died on Sunday Leaving Surviving 29 Descendants . Martha Stark-Atwood, one of the ten children of Marshall Stark , who became a resident of what is now Sycamore township in 1835, the first year of the settlement of DeKalb county, and helped found Sycamore, passed from this life at her home at Collins, Iowa, on Sunday, Oct . 25 . Mrs . Atwood had been in poor health for a long time, and although everything possible had been done to relieve her suffering and prolong the useful life of this loved one, she gradually failed to the end. Her death was caused by gallstones. Martha Stark, the eldest daughter was born in the old Stark homestead about two miles north of Sycamore on December 26, 1843 . She would have been 82 years of age had she survived until December next . Here she attained the years of a vigorous and useful womanhood, and was married to Hosea Atwood, a veteran of the Civil war. Mr. Atwood was for seven years the fearless and competent city marshal of Sycamore , but for many years he was engaged in farming in Jasper county, Iowa , to which place the family removed in the eighties . To Mr . and Mrs . Atwood were bom five sons and one daughter, namely: Richard, John , Henry , Stark , Mrs . Kate Chandler and Morris , all of whom survive , together with 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren . Mrs . Atwood also leaves surviving her five sisters, all of whom were present during her last hours. They are Mesdames Harris, Maitland, Wiggins, Brower and Lee, the latter two from Sycamore, all of whom, with A . L . Stark, a nephew of Sycamore, attended the funeral which was held at Collins on Tuesday Mrs. Atwood was admired or her sterling character, her kindliness and those qualities which made her a model wife and mother .
