Three Services Planned For Rev. Harvey C. Gabel
Services will be held Thursday and Friday for the Rev. Harvey C. Gabel, who helped build Millard's Faith-Westwood United Methodist Church into a congregation of 1,800.
Gabel, 60, died of cancer Sunday at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He had been hospitalized for more than two months after undergoing bone-marrow transplant treatment.
Gabel served churches in Meridan, Illinois, Rockford, Illinois, Beatrice, Nebraska, and Gordon, Nebraska, before his appointment to Westwood Heights United Methodist Church in Millard in 1968.
Under Gabel, the Faith-Westwood congregation more than quadrupled, said Gabel's associate pastor, the Rev. Lawrence A. Moffet. Faith-Westwood was created by the April 1970 merger of Gabel's Westwood Heights church and the First United Methodist Church.
The two congregations initially totalling about 400 people, were united in a merger that was "not joyfully accepted" by denominational executives at that time, Moffet said. "Harvey handled it with sensitivity, and the congregation's growth took off.
"He had a marvelous ability to accept people where they were and bring out the best in them. He could make people feel the Gospel."
Gabel had battled cancer for more than three years. He appeared to be cancer-free for two years before the disease
was detected again around Christmas.
Despite the new diagnosis, Gabel led a group of Omaha Methodists to the Holy Land - Isreal, Jordan and Egypt - from January 21 to February 4. He resumed cancer treatment after returning.
Gabel was active in youth activities and community issues and was a frequent speaker in the Millard schools. The Millard Education Foundation inducted him into its Millard Hall of Fame last month. Gov. Kerrey spoke at the ceremony.
Gabel and his wife, Toni, also were noted for their clown ministry, which performed for dozens of groups through the region. A World-Herald story in May 1983 told about the clown ministry and Gabel's battle with cancer.
The Faith-Westwood pastor had recently announced his semiretirement. He was to move to Florida in June, where he planned a ministry of evangelism and visitation, Moffet said.
Gabel will be succeeded at Faith-Westwood by Dr. Don Marsh of the Geneva (Nebraska) United Methodist Church. Marsh previously served at Omaha's Hanscom Park United Methodist Church and St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Papillion.
Gabel's survivors include his wife; daughters, Teri and Judi, both of Omaha; son, Paul A., of Evanston, Illinois; and brother, Wallace, of Chesapeake, Virginia.
