Bowen Bertemas Qualls was born on April 23, 1922, one of 7 children born to his late parents William Thomas and Lemma Vilinda (Childers) Qualls in Jasper. On August 3, 1946, he married Lona Faye Brock and 2 children were born to this union: Thomas and Teresa. Bowen owned and operated Bowen's Department Store for many years. He was a veteran of WW II where he received a Purple Heart. He passed away on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002 after being involved in an auto accident on Sept. 1 in Jasper. In addition to his parents and wife of 55 years, he was preceded in death by 2 siblings: Cora Davis and Franklin Qualls. Left to cherish his memory are 2 children: Tommy (Alice) Qualls and Teresa (Larry) Fountain, both of Jasper; 8 grandchildren: Michele (Greg) Parks, Sherry (Richard) Anderson, and Bo Qualls; Amy (Chris) Leake, Suzanne (Chris) Plumley, Julie, Tommy, and Bonnie Fountain; 2 great-grandchildren: Jackson Leake and Austin Parks; and 4 siblings: Paul Qualls of Jasper, Ray Qualls of Marble Hill, Ola Ayers of Cartersville, and Faye Jackson of Warner Robins. The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Monday from Antioch Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert Allen, Marvin Chatham, Buddy Roper and Nathan Smith officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Local Chapter #47 DAV in charge of graveside rites. The following served as pallbearers: Chris Plumley, Paul Worbington, Thomas Fountain, Bo Qualls, Greg Parks and Jeremy Cochran. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
