John was the oldest of 16 children of Marcus Lafayette Cockerham and Phoebe Jane Wiles. He married Ada Mae Reed on 1 May 1922 in Princeton, Mercer County. He and Ada were the parents of 9 children, including Lawrence Edward (1923-1992), Lenard (1923-1923), Lola Mae (1924-2006), Randolph Franklin (1926-1976), William Herbert, George Dana, Arlen Benjamin, Mildred Ruth, and Larry Marcus.
