Hungarian Monarch. Born the only son of Wladislav II of Bohemia and Hungary and Anne de Foix. Before his birth, he was given the hand of Maria of Habsburg, granddaughter of Maximilian I. On June 22nd, 1515 he and his sister were married to the emperor's grandchildren. In the following year, he succeeded his father, but remained under the regency of a council until January 1522. At the time he was crowned, the kingdom was very weakened, and the forces of the Ottoman Empire stood on the borders. In 1526, his troops met with those of Suleyman the Magnificent at Mohacs. The Hungarians were defeated, and Louis drowned in the Danube while fleeing. His body was found two months later. He had died without heir, and was succeeded by his brother-in-law Ferdinand, thus ending the regency of the Jagiellonian (Jagiellon) dynasty and making way for the rule of the Habsburg family.
