Mr. Canida was born August 31, 1949, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of John Edward and Gertrude Crabtree Canida. He was married to Terry Busey in February, 1976.
Sam grew up in Keokuk and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1967 and later from Indian Hills Community College. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was a computer technician and spent most of his adult life in California and Texas. He operated a Karate school in Keokuk and studied under nationally known teachers, including Tadashi Yamashita, from whom he received his Fourth Degree Black Belt. His other passion was his Harley Davidson with which he enjoyed participating in "Poker Runs".
He is survived by his mother, Gertrude Canida of Keokuk; a son, Samuel Harvey "Tracey" Canida III, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Richard Canida and his wife, Beth, of Hubert, North Carolina; a sister, Paulette Mitchell and her husband, Clyde, of Keokuk; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services were Monday, May 11, 2009 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Clegguart Mitchell officiating. Burial followed at Keokuk National Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice.
