Msgr. Masterson was ordained in 1940 and named an assistant at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. In 1947 he was assigned to the Archdiocese of Chicago Chancery Office and from 1953 to 1964 was its vice chancellor. During the 1960s he was also Pastor of St. John Berchmans Church, Chicago.
