Mrs. John Bittenbender a lady whose residence in Knoxville has extended over a period of 37 years, died at her home of her son, Levi Bittenbender. In the city, at 9:30 o'clock on Monday morning, March 30, 1907, age 80 years, 3 months, 7 days. Death resulted from old age, and came as painlessly as the sleep of childhood.
She was up and around the house Saturday and was only confined to her bed one day.
Mary Bitting was born in Schuylkill county, Pa, December 23, 1818.
In that state and county. on March 19,1848, she was united in marriage with John Bittenbender, Six children was born to them, all of whom are still living. Their names and present place of residence follow. Nelson, Levi, and John W. Bittenbender, Knoxville; Caroline now Mrs. W.E. Wright, Loveland, Colorado; Samuel Bittenbender of Ponca, Nebraska and Stephen K. Whose home is in California.
The family came to Knoxville April1, 1871. John Bittenbender the husband and father died in this city, Sept 28,1877. He was well known as a retired capitalist.
Besides the members of the immediate family, deceased leaves 16 grandchildren and 4 great grand children and a host of great friends.
The funeral services were held at the Levi Bittenbender home on Wednesday afternoon April 1, conducted by Rev. J.H. Burma. Interment was beside her husband in Graceland Cemetery.
