John Edward McCulley
1924-2009
A true Hero, John Edward McCulley, 85, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, August 8th of age related causes.
He was born to the late Charles and Artie McCulley on June 10, 1924, in Oak Valley, KS. John graduated from Longton High School, Kansas in 1942 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after. During World War II he was assigned to the 22nd Marine Regiment, which participated in campaigns in the Marshall Islands, Guadalcanal, and the Marianas Islands. He was wounded in the landing of Guam on July 21st, 1944 and lost his right arm. John was discharged from the Marines in January 1946 earning the Presidential Unit Citation, the Pacific Area Medal and the Purple Heart.

John graduated from the University of Oregon in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He began his career in life insurance sales then obtained his real estate license and later his broker's license. In 1972 he obtained the designation of Senior Member of the American Society of Appraisers. From July of 1973 to permanent retirement in 2003 John worked independently in his own business as John McCulley Realtor.

John also participated in many civic activities. He participated in the financial drive, construction and operation of McKenzie-Willamette Hospital. He has also served on various committees, boards and membership with St. Alice Church, the Springfield Jaycees, Willamalane Park and Recreation District, the Springfield and Eugene Chambers of Commerce, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the local Chapter of the Navy League of the United States and a member of B.P.O.E. Springfield since 1971. From 1964 to 1967 John served on the Springfield City Council until he was appointed acting Mayor of Springfield upon the death of then Mayor David Schofield. He was then elected Mayor for another term through 1972. Major accomplishments include the development of the first articulating elbow joint for an artificial arm receiving recognition from the American Medical Association, getting Springfield High School students involved in city government with the removal of parking meters and working with the city council in the location of Gateway Street and the land use in the Gateway area. Through his efforts he was recognized as Springfield's 1st Citizen in 2003 and Realtor of the Year in 1974.

In April of 1946 he married Marie Eubank. Through 17 years of marriage they had five children: Mary (McCulley) Hemphill, spouse Harry, John Jr., spouse Katie, George, spouse Eileen, Margaret McCulley, Marie (McCulley) Nickelson, spouse David. His wife, Marie passed away on April 11th 1963. John later married Florence Scarano on November 23, 1968. He is survived by his wife, five children, ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two sisters, Berniece Kitterman of Washington and Marybell Stong of Kansas.

We will always have fond memories. He loved his family and his community. He taught us to tie our shoes and drive a stick shift, with only one arm. He taught us not only the importance of honesty, integrity and civic duty but how important it was to always seek the truth, stand up for what you believe, be there for our friends, and love unconditionally.

John was the type of man that every young boy thinks he will grow up to be, and every old man wishes he had been. If he hadn't been our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, we would have wished he were. He lived the definition of courage.

A private service for the family was held on August 11th. If you would like to honor John's memory, we ask that you donate to his favorite charity, the Oregon Veterans Home.
