Mary Harriett Utterback McCulley was born to William Utterback 1822-1902 and Martha Jane Lash 1824-1887 in Bargersville, Johnson County, Indiana.

She married John Hampton McCulley June 30, 1867 in Benton County, Iowa. She and John and her parents and several family members arrived in Montgomery County, Kansas in Fall of 1869.

Oak Valley, Kansas became their home. Their children and grandchildren grew up in Oak Valley. Their children and grandchildren attended a one room school house in Oak Valley and graduated from Longton High School.
