Joseph Vinton DARST, an honored veteran of the Civil War and a well known and substantial farmer and land owner in Jay county, Indiana, died December 21st, 1912 at his home in Madison township.

Joseph was born in Gallia County, Ohio, January 21st, 1846 and was the son of William and Barbara (HALFHILL) DARST.

In 1855, Joseph was nine years old when his parents moved from Ohio to Indiana. He received his schooling at the old Liberty school house in Madison township.

He was fifteen years old when the Civil war broke out, and at the age of 17, he enlisted into the Union Army on June 16th, 1863 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. He served as a Private for 3 years for Company E, 2nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery, and Mustered Out with Company "E" on August 23rd, 1865.

Upon the completion of his military service he returned to his father's home in Madison township to help his father maintain the family farm until his marriage to Sarah Davidson, the daughter of James Davidson and Margaret (Martha) Ferguson, on December 15, 1868 in Mercer County, Ohio.

After his marriage to Sarah, Joseph began farming on his own, by renting a tract of eighty acres from his father for six years. Then he bought eighty acres in Greene township and moved there. Eight years later he traded that farm for a tract of fifty acres in Madison township and bought an adjoining eighty acres, where he continued farming the remainder of his life. He died December 21st, 1912.

Joseph and his wife had four children; two sons, Joseph and Frederick, and twin daughters Ethel and Edith.

Joseph was a Republican and was an active member of Henry McLaughlin post of the Grand Army of the Republic at Salamonia. He was also a member of the Pleasant Hill Christian church, as was his wife.

A 1907 Madison Township Directory for Salamonia town, Jay County, Indiana list: Joseph V. and Sarah Darst living on sec 10, h, 80, Salamonia RR2, a farm near his son's farm of William and Ida, and their two children, Vernon and Winnie. Also living on a farm nearby is his nephew Charles W. Darst (Memorial# 42072877) and his wife, Lola Darst.
