Morris "Vernon" Darst
May 10, 1896 - May 28, 1921

Vernon the son of Joseph William "Will" Darst and Ida Belle Ruckwied, married Vera Ada Locker the daughter of Jacob Daniel Locker and Leah Etta Freemeyer. They were married on January 28th, 1914 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. They had two children together; a daughter Claudia Marciel, and a son Myron Gail.

World War I Registration Card #13-2-18-A, Precinct Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana. Dated June 5th, 1917 for Morris Vernon Darst age 21. Birth date/place, May 10, 1896 Salamonia, Indiana. Address, RR1 Salamonia, Indiana. Occupation, Farmer-Married supporting a wife and child. Height tall, slender build, gray eyes and black hair.

A veteran of The Great War (WWI), Morris enlisted into the US Army, February 6th, 1918 and was assigned to the 89th Division. He is listed in the "Roster and History, 314th Field Signal Battalion, American Expeditionary Forces, Germany May 1919" on page 6, under the section Company "A" Privates, Darst, Morris V. Portland, Indiana. He took part in the battles of St. Mihiel and the Argonne. Combat Service Record: St. Mihiel, Sept. 12-16, 1918. Meuse-Argonne, Oct. 14-Nov. 11, 1918. Lucey (Lorraine), Aug. 4-Sept. il, 1918. Euvezin (Lorraine), Sept. 17-Oct. 7, 1918.

While serving in France, he was operating a military motorcycle with his Captain in the sidecar, they were both hit by the same piece of shrapnel. Vernon was slightly wounded but his Captain was hit in the neck, severing a blood vessel and he bled to death.

Just prior to the end of the war, Vernon was "Gassed" and was discharged from the Army on June 10th, 1919. For him in reality, there was "no discharge from the war". In less than two years after being discharged from the Army, at the age of 25, at 2:00pm on May 28th, 1921 he died. Cause of Death listed on the Death Certificate was: Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Contributory: "Gassed while in Service".

The Indiana State Board of Health - Certificate of Death #14134, also list Vernon Morris Darst as a Divorced Farmer. He left behind his wife, Vera Ada Darst age 25 and his two children; daughter Claudia Marciel Darst age 6, and son Myron Gail Darst age 3.

On Vernon's discharge paper was written "Character Excellent". It was his great opportunity to be on the front the day of the Armistice was signed, and his happy privilege to flash by wireless to Paris, one among the first telegrams that conveyed to the world, the happy news that the fighting had ceased. Vernon was also a proud member of the American Legion at South Bend, Indiana, Healthwin Post No. 302.

A 1907 Madison Township Directory for Salamonia town, Jay County, Indiana list: William Darst, his wife Ida and their two children, Vernon and Winnie. Living at sec 9, h, 50, Salamonia RR1. The Darst and Locker Families are living next door to each other.

The 1910 US-Census for Madison, Jay County, Indiana list: James (Joseph) W. Darst age 40, Married-Head of Household, wife Ida B. age 34, and their two children; son Morris V. age 13, and daughter Mable W. age 11. The Darst and Locker Families are living next door to each other. All listed born in Indiana.

1920 US-Census, Madison, Jay County, Indiana a year after returning from WWI lists Vernon M. Darst age 23, married-not employed son-in-law, living with his step-father, Joseph E. Andrews age 46, Head of Household-Farmer, and his mother Ida B. Andrews age 43, and his step-brother Clyde D. Andrews age 24 not employed. All listed born in Indiana.

1920 US-Census, Madison, Jay County, Indiana. Vernon's wife Vera and their two children are living with her parents, Jacob D. Locker age 66, Married-Head of Household, and his wife, Leah Locker age 60. Married daughter, Vera A. Darst age 23, her daughter, Marciel Darst age 5 and her son, Myron G. Darst age 1.

On October 17th, 1921 Mrs. Vera Ada Darst C-438489, Route 3, Ft. Recovery, Ohio was Awarded Compensation, from the Bureau of War Risk Insurance, as the guardian of the minor children of Morris Vernon Darst, Pvt. Co. A, 314th F.S.Bn; Claudia M. Darst and Myron Gail Darst.

On Vera's 2nd Marriage Certificate, dated November 24th, 1926 Jay County, Indiana, states she was Divorced from her 1st husband in the year 1920. (This divorce may have been a requirement to receive Bureau of War Risk Insurance Compensation for both of their children after Vernon's death.)

The grave sites of his mother and sister are nearby.
