Private John A. Van Scoy enlisted and was mustered into service as a Private in Company D of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 19th, 1861, at New York City, New York, for two years service.

He was wounded in action and captured on September 17th, 1862, at Sharpsburg, Maryland, being confined in Richmond, Virginia, on September 28th, 1862, and paroled on October 6th, 1862, at Aiken's Landing, Virginia.

He reported at the Camp Parole, Maryland, and was forwarded onto Alexandria, Virginia, in November of 1862, and rejoined the regiment. He was transferred to Company K of the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 6th, 1863, and was discharged on May 14th, 1863.
