DANIEL DIED IN THE RAPID CITY FLOOD
Wickard, Daniel Delano, b. 04/04/1945, d. 06/09/1972, SA USN, Plot: D 1016, bur. 06/14/1972.
Daniel Wickard was born April 4, 1945 at Green River Sweetwater County Wyoming to Eldo Wickard and Dorothy Mills Wickard.
On the night of the flood Daniel volunteered as a reserve officer to work with a regular duty officer and several fireman in the Canyon Lake area. People near 32nd street and Jackson Blvd didn't know that Rapid Creek was rising, even though water was running over their doorsteps. So Daniel Wickard and others were sent to evacuate them, some were already beyond help.
Water was running over the 32nd street bridge but it had not collapsed. A rope wastretched across the bridge, it was believed that Wickard and others crossed safely to the other side, but no one could see what happened and Daniel's body was found the next day.
Daniel was survived by his wife Shirley: two daughters Robin 5 yrs old and Penny 1; and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Eldo Wickard in Rapid City and his grandmother Ella Mills also of Rapid City SD.
He was in the Civil Service at Ellsworth AFB and buried at Black Hills National Cemetery.
