Obituary of Shirley Catherine Fayard Gautier
Mrs. Shirley Catherine Fayard Gautier passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at her home in St. Martin.
Born in Biloxi, Mrs. Gautier was a life-long native of the Coast. A 1934 graduate of Biloxi High School, she played four years on Biloxi High's first girls varsity basketball team. She was also a member of the Biloxi High girl's track team.
She married her beloved husband, Upton R. Gautier, December 12, 1936 and supported him throughout her life in his many successful business ventures. She was board member and officer of Bay Waterworks, Inc. which serviced the Cedar Grove subdivision in St. Martin and was also an officer of the board for Bay Development in Biloxi.
Mrs. Gautier enjoyed and took pride in her housekeeping, gardening, music, and sewing skills. For 15 years she worked diligently each Christmas to design, create, sew, and dress dolls for the Biloxi Doll and Toy Fund. Through her efforts, and the efforts of many generous seamstresses, girls along the Coast received originally dressed dolls under their Christmas trees each year. She took much joy in giving, and in her volunteer work. She was recognized for her talent and efforts through numerous awards, including winning the 1972 Best of Show award.
Mrs. Gautier had a kind heart and a very gentle spirit. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Gautier was a life-long Methodist, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Biloxi since she was eight years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Henry Fayard and Mrs. Amelia Krohn Fayard; a sister, Mrs. Irwine Barnett; and a brother, Mr. Oswald "Nookie" Fayard
She is survived by her beloved husband, Upton R. Gautier; her beloved son, James U. Gautier; her three treasured granddaughters, Rene Gautier-Mullins, Michelle Gautier-Evans and Catherine Gautier; and two special grandsons-in-law, Robert Mullins and Brian Evans.
Mrs. Gautier is also survived by her brother, Mr. Louis A. "Dutch" Fayard; a sister, Mrs. Norma Richards; and by her six beautiful great-grandchildren, Ceann Lewis, Jacob Mullins, Brianna Evans, Marie and Debbie Wheatley, and Cathleen Demouey, as well as one step-grandchild, Patricia Evans. She would also fondly remember many loving nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Gautier wanted us to extend a special thank you to Dr. Lydia Latour; Mrs. Marlene Gann, physical therapist, for her love, friendship and support; and to Trinity Hospice for all the time, energy and care they gave to Mrs. Gautier and her family when it was most needed. A most special thank you to Trinity staff members Bonnie Staton, Junna Jackson, Alice Weems and Brenda Voelkel for being there when they were most needed.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2004 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Biloxi. The funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. in the church. Burial will follow at Southern Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Biloxi.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Gautier preferred loved ones and friends to make donations to either the First United Methodist Church of Biloxi, the American Cancer Society, or their favorite church or charity.
