Lillie Mae Tomlin, 91, nee Ford, passed away peacefully in her Nashville home surrounded by her family, friends and her loyal dog, Max, on July 12, 2005. Mrs. Tomlin spent her final days with grace, courage, dignity and her, always present, good humor.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Guy Tomlin; her 13 brothers and sisters; her mother, Mary Celia Rosier Parker Ford; and her father, William Thomas Ford.
Mrs. Tomlin was born in Rossington, Ky., where the Ford family lived for many years; theirs was the first household in the county to have electric lights and Mrs. Tomlin's father was one of the founders of Kevil, Kentucky's New Liberty Methodist Church.
Mrs. Tomlin attended Rossington Elementary and Heath High School.
In her early 20s, she married Guy Tomlin and they relocated to Detroit, where Mr. Tomlin worked for many years as a job setter and tool maker.
Her love for her family and her childhood home brought Mrs. Tomlin back to the Paducah area, every summer, to visit with her mother, brothers, sisters and extended family members, all of whom lived in and around Ballard and McCracken counties. Her favorite annual event was the Ford Family Reunion, held every year on the first Sunday in June. Mrs. Tomlin was able to attend those reunions up to the year of 2002.
While living in Detroit, Mrs. Tomlin spent many years in the Nursery at Highland Park General Hospital where she took great joy in working with the infants on her ward.
When Mr. Tomlin passed away, she then returned to live in her beloved Paducah where she spent some of her happiest years among her many loving friends and family members. Mrs. Tomlin was a Duchess of Paducah and an honorary Kentucky Colonel. She had an irrepressible sense of humor that charmed and enchanted everyone she met. In fact, one day when her daughter told her how much everyone delighted in her wit, Mrs. Tomlin conceded, with a gleam in her eye, that she sometimes "thinks it up ahead of time."
In Paducah, Mrs. Tomlin was actively involved in numerous community organizations. She volunteered at Western Baptist Hospital, was a very active member in both Paducah's Margaret Hank Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the West Nashville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the Paducah Women's Club. Always enthusiastic about living and life with a real love for and commitment to Homemaking, the only regret she seemed to have was not becoming a Home Economics teacher, a dream she had had since her youth.
Although she was very busy, she always found time to help her family and friends in time of sickness or need. During the 1980s, with help of her children, Richard Tomlin and Lily Tomlin and close friend, Michael Langston, Mrs. Tomlin was instrumental in bringing new vigor to Downtown Paducah, most notably by helping to establish Chez Tomlin, a gift shop, tearoom and gallery.
Later, she moved to Nashville where she would live on and off the rest of her life. The last few years of her life, she also lived in Palm Springs, Calif., spending long weekends with her children.
Mrs. Tomlin is survived by her loving son, Richard Tomlin of Nashville; her loving daughter, Lily Tomlin of Los Angeles; and devoted family members, Michael Langston of Nashville and Jane Wagner of Los Angeles; her devoted sister-in-law, Erma Bonar of Michigan; as well as many adored and adoring nieces, nephews and friends.
The family wishes to express a very special and grateful thank you to Mrs. Tomlin's friend and constant companion these last few years, Mrs. Joyce Sedberry, and to her caregivers, Nadine Walls and Lisa Brandy.
