Librarian Evelyn Olson, 80, who was 'full of life,' dies

SIOUX FALLS - If Evelyn Olson had the time, she could find a connection with almost anyone she spoke to.

"She would dig, much like a miner, until she found a connection between herself and the person she'd met," said her daughter, Cyndi. "She was full of life, and was always going. I don't think I would have been able to keep up with her social schedule."

Evelyn Ingeborg Olson, 80, died of leukemia Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the Sioux Valley Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls.

Evelyn Amdahl was born July 29, 1919, in Flandreau. Shortly before her brother left to serve in World War II, Olson was badly burned in an auto accident in northern Nebraska. She was hospitalized in Sioux Falls for eight months.

"She gained a special appreciation for life and was made stronger by this event," her daughter said.

She graduated from Flandreau High School, then attended Augustana College. After she received her bachelor's degree, she attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating with a degree in library science in 1952.

Her desire for learning came from a background in which knowledge was respected. "Her grandmother was a teacher who attended St. Olaf College in a time when few women did so," Olson said. "Her mother was also a teacher. Education was incredibly important in that family."

She married Felix Olson on Oct. 17, 1953, in Sioux Falls. The couple raised their family and made their home on a farm northwest of Inwood, Iowa. Her husband died in 1998.

She worked as a teacher at Washington High School for a time, and also worked briefly as the librarian at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. "She enjoyed her work and helped to get the library going," her daughter said.

As the assistant librarian at Sioux Falls College, now the University of Sioux Falls, Olson found a job she enjoyed. "She worked with students and had fun helping them develop their research assignments," her daughter said. She retired in 1989.

Olson's docket was often full, and she participated in a number of organizations, including Alpha Delta Kappa chapter, Sons of Norway, the American Association of University Women Book Review Group and the Augustana Library Association, on which she served as secretary.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in rural Inwood, and took part in many activities within the church. She also supported community concerts and served as a Sioux Valley Hospital volunteer.

Olson's grace and charm affected those she met, and defined her personality. "We've gotten so many calls and messages and the word most often used to describe her is 'elegant,' " Olson said. "She was a true lady who truly enjoyed people."

In addition to her daughter, survivors include a son, three grandchildren, and three brothers.

Services begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in rural Inwood with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday until 5 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Inwood. Visitation continues at the church from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with the family present. A remembrance service begins at 7:30 p.m. at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Our Savior's Lutheran Church building fund or the Sioux Valley Hospice Cottage.
