She was born in Isle of Wight, Virginia, on April 10, 1922, the daughter of the late Obed Wilbur Johnson and Sallie Mildred Deyerle Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Woods Garth III; and her brothers, Ryland Johnson and David Johnson.
She is survived by her beloved sister, Virginia Johnson Good; two sons, James Woods Garth IV and his wife, Elizabeth, and David Hancock Garth and his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Jane Deyerle Garth and her partner, Robert Elliott, and Virginia Garth Green and her husband, Anders. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Suzanne Ortiz and her husband, Jorge, Dana Washington and her husband, Dwayne, John Osborne, Jamie Osborne and his wife, Lauren, Billy Edwards, Sarah Tullo and her husband, Vinny, Cecilia Green, Mallory Garth, Katie Leach and her husband, JJ, Charlie Osborne, Bobby Green and his wife, Lauren; and six great-grandchildren, Erin Ortiz, David Ortiz, Taylor Garth, Myah Washington, Avery Tullo and Jack Leach. Other extended family members include Michael Clark, Susan Kristensen and Karolyn Sink.
Sarah was an active member of the community. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was very involved in her church, Olivet Presbyterian Church. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. Whether she played once a week or once a month, this was something that she always looked forward to. Despite all of their many hobbies, Grandma and Grandpa never missed one of their grandchildren's sporting events. They could always count on their support. They loved dancing and spent many nights at Fry's Spring Beach Club on the dance floor. They hosted countless tailgate parties with family and friends as avid supporters of University of Virginia football.
Sarah was never happier than when she was surrounded by her family.
She especially enjoyed going to Emerald Isle, North Carolina, every summer with all of her children, grand-children and great-grand-children.
She was the rock of her family and she will be greatly missed by all.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 2009, at Olivet Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Albert Connette and the Reverend Jane T. Govan officiating.
