Felix Camille Pissarro, third son of impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, and set to become an established painter in his own right, had he not died of tuberculosis aged only 23. He was Jewish and can be expected to be of Danish nationality. The family had connections with England - Camille senior had sought refuge here during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 - 1872. and had married his French partner here. Felix was born in France, at Pontoise, some twenty miles north of Paris. The Pissarro family originally had Danish nationality and were of mixed stock - the name Pissarro being Portugese. At the time of his death, Felix Camille Pissarro is believed to have been living near the River Thames, in Richmond town centre, presumably to be near his elder brother Lucien, who had married an English girl and had business interests in the Richmond area. His artistic style followed the family impressionist tradition, young Camille's style being particularly bold and direct. The memorial stone bears a personal message, in French, from Felix's parents. The stone is substantial, of good quality and finely carved. Like many other Victorian stones, it shows slight lamination. It appears to have been cleaned, recently, by sand-blasting.
