Pershing V. Elder, 72, of 1403 Yewell St., died Tuesday in his home following a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Donohue-Lensing Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial:
Nichols Cemetery, Nichols.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice Hardwick of Minneapolis and Peggy Elder and Ann Elder, both of Iowa City; and two brothers, Waldo of Wilton and Hub of West Liberty.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a sister.
Born Nov. 21, 1918, in Nichols, a son of Earl and Effie Gifford Elder, he married Evelyn McCaffrey Jan. 14, 1946, in Muscatine. He worked for many years at the Iowa Hospitals in the housekeeping department, retiring in 1977. During World War II, he worked for the Civil Air Patrol. He also volunteered as an interpreter for the deaf at the university and was a member of National Interpreters for the Deaf.
The Rev. Gary Burkhart will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to Iowa Western Community College Interpreter Training Program, Council Bluffs.
