J. R. Edwards, M.D., a graduate of a medical college in Virginia, but never a practitioner, died at his home near Shiro, Texas, April 7, aged more than 80.

Born in Warren Co., Tn. Died in Tx. Mar: Mary A. Deshazer or Zuber in 1847. children were: Sallie, b: 1848; William O. b: 1849; Mary E. b: 1852; Warren Z. B: 1854 in Teague, Tx.; Elisha E. b: 1856; Henry R., born 1859; Joseph R. b: 1861; Edward A. b: 1864 and Virginia L. born in 1867. Joseph's father was Jesse R. Edwards. Joseph Rush Edwards family was among the earliest settlers of Grimes County. According to family tradition, the history of the Edwards family in Grimes began in 1846 when Mary Ann Deshazo Zuber was walking down a country road with her girfriend. They saw a young man ride by on horseback. As he rode past them, Mary told her friend that was the man she was going to marry. Asked who he was, Mary replied: "Dr. Rush Edwards". Surprised, her friend said she didn't know they had ever met. Mary answered, "we haven't yet". Well, they did meet and, true to her word, she did marry Dr. Edwards on 4/22/1847.

J.R. Edwards was born in TN on 10/31/1820, and came to TX about 1845. He had the distinction of being one of the first Drs in the Shiro-Roans Prairie area. JR believed in the value of formal education and demonstrated this interest by starting a small private school and by being one of the first benefactors to a college that has since moved to San Antonio, and is now known as Trinity University. He was a Mason for over 30 years and helped establish the Masonic Lodge in Grimes County.

Joseph's wife, Mary Ann Zuber, was born in LA on 4/15/1826. She came to TX about 1833 with her parents, Abraham and Mary Ann Mann Zuber, who settled on a farm near the present town of Shiro. JR and Mary Ann were married at her parents farm, known as the Zuber homestead, and they lived there for the rest of their lives. Mary Ann Died in 1881 and JR in 1904. They were parents of seven surviving children, all born in Grimes county.

Sara Cornelia, married Robert Gooch and they had 4 children; Louis, Jesse, Josephine and Robert.

William Oscar married Georgia Foster and they had 5 children, only two living to maturity: Mary Ann and Sarah. William served with the Frontier Battalion of the TX Rangers.

Mary Elizabeth, married Charles Gooch and they ahd 5 children: Antoinette, Willie, Lydia, Charles and Katharine.

Warren Robert married Ida Taylor and they had 6 children; William, Mary, John, Lee, Joseph and Florence. Warren was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister.

Elisa Floyd married Bertie Kerr and they had 3 children: Marvin, Mattie Laura, and Porter. Elisa was a civil engineer and was the Grimes County Surveyor from 1889 to 1894. In 1903 he opened a general merchandise store in Shiro. He was a member of the Shiro Presbyterian Church singing bass there for 47 years.

Edward Austin married and divorced, no children. Ed taught school in Shiro and other places and at one time was the superintendent of the School in Shiro.

Virginia Lee married Francis marion Mayfield and they had 7 children; Jessie, Joseph, Mary, Aubrey, Ivy, Dewitt and Walton. Marion was the first postmaster of Shiro. Jenne was active in the Shiro Presbyterian Church. She organized many box suppers to help raise money to build the present church.
