GRAHAM – Samuel Haywood Ray 58, of Rt. 3, Graham, died at his home at 6:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon after two weeks of failing health and five weeks of critical illness.
He was a native of Haw River, son of the late Crawford M. and Nancy Hughes Ray. He was a member of Haw River Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grace Hughes Ray of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Agnew of Burlington and Mrs. Arthur Plante of the home; one stepson, Wallace G. Jeffries of Newport News, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Amos Roney of Haw River; three brothers, Carl Ray of Haw River and Crawford Ray and Ben Ray, both of Burlington; and four grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at Haw River Methodist Church. Rev. C.C. Capps will officiate assisted by Rev. Jimmy Shepherd. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The body will remain at McClure Funeral Home in Graham until 30 minutes prior to the service when it will be taken to the church to lie in state. The family will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 until 9 o'clock.
Active pallbearers will be Ralph Pearson, Richard Parks, Broadie Riley, Glenn Stout, James T. Martin, and Thomas Smith.
Members of the Men's Sunday School Class at Haw River Methodist Church will be honorary pallbearers.
