Son of Montreville Weaver Black. & Susanna (Edmonds) Black. Husband of Mary Elizabeth Garrison, to whom he was married October 8, 1888 by Rev A.H. Barrett in Buncombe County, NC.

Had 16 Children. Adopted 2 about 1889 after his brother Joseph Woodfin Black and his wife Irene Lucinda Buckner Black died. Those children were named Lattie Cleveland Black (buried Thomas F Dillingham Cemetery in Buncombe County) and Mary Jane (called Janie) Black Garrison (buried in Locust Grove Cemetery with her husband).

Worked for the railroad for many years in Asheville.

According to my Father Wilfred F Black (Grandson of CP) he died during a nap after lunch. Wilfred said his habit was to take a short nap after lunch each day before returning to his farm work.

My father, Wilfred F. Black used to tell a oral history tale he heard as a boy about Pitt Black [his paternal grandfather] when he was "courting" Mary Elizabeth Garrison.

It went this way...... Pitt Black had been coming for a while to "court" Mary Elizabeth. Every time he came the Mitch Garrison family killed and cooked up a chicken. So after while the chickens became alarmed. So every time they saw Pitt coming they would cluck at a high and fast pitched cadence as only chickens could saying "...Pitt Black, Pitt Black, Oh god here comes Pitt Black!" In his telling... the last part was said like a chicken clucking fast and furious...

One of the amazing things to me about this story... more than the story itself, were the smiles and chuckling "the telling" of the story evoked from my Dad.... with out fail every time he told it! I could easily imagine how he was remembering the setting and person(s) who had told it to him.

Some of the children died before adulthood. They were
Callie Black - twin to Caryl who died a few weeks after birth in 1914

Annie Black born March 28, 1892 and died in 1902. Annie was named after her Great Grandmother, Ann Edmonds, mother to Susannah Edmonds Black (Wife of Montreville), Grandmother to CP Black.

Woodfin Black Born and died in 1902. Woodfin was named after his deceased Uncle, Joseph Woodfin Black.

Thelma died in the flu pandemic in early 1919. Per Wilfred F Black prior to 2007 and to Bill (William) Black through 2013 - During the pandemic, Thelma's mother, Mary Elizabeth rode side saddle around the area caring for other families as she was considered a "medicine woman." And when Thelma died it was very heartbreaking for the family. A letter Thelma wrote in December 1918 is posted on her memorial.
