He married Barbara Farley

He was an editor & publisher of several different newspapers in Ks. One of his awards included the 1984 William Allen White Foundation's National Citation for Journalistic Merit at KU.

Survivors include his wife, daughters Elizabeth Ann Roberts & Marilyn Awbrey, son David.

Stuart Awbrey was born February 26, 1918, in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Kansas City, Mo. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he began his journalism career at the Emporia Gazette in 1938. In September of that year, he moved to the News-Herald in Hutchinson. He was named editor-publisher of the Garden City Telegram in 1953 when the paper was acquired by the Harris Group of Hutchinson.Awbrey was named editor of the Burlington Hawk Eye Gazette in 1957, but returned to Hutchinson where he was named editor and publisher of the News in 1975. Awbrey was named editor and publisher of the Burlington paper in 1979, retiring as editor in 1984 and publisher the following year. He died in October, 1985, at age 67.

AWBREY-FARLEY WEDDING TO BE MONDAY MORNING

Attendants are announced for the wedding of Barbara Farley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James N. Farley, and Stuart Awbrey, of Hutchinson, son of Mrs. S.C. Awbrey of Kansas City, MO. The wedding will be at 9 o'clock Monday morning in the Farley home, 213 East Sixth. Rev. Arthur L. Miller will officiate.
Mrs. Harold G. Wood of Winslow, Ariz. and Powell Awbrey of Kansas City, brother of the groom, will be attendants. Donna Benscheldt will light the tapers. Ushers will be Whitley Austin and Robert Farley, brother of the bride. A small reception will follow the ceremony.
