On May 24, 1995, Maude M. McDivitt Landon was laid to rest on the land she grew up on. Maude was the eldest of 11 children born to Sarah and Thomas McDivitt. She was born November 13,1892. The family believes she was born on the original sight of the McDivitt farmhouse, which now is a stone building located on the hill of Merle Hay Chapel Hill Cemetery. Maude did not have a birth certificate. Her birth was recorded in the Family Bible, which was a common practice in country communities.
In 1912, she married Conrad H. Landon and lived most of her married life on a two-acre plot facing 66th Street, which was part of the McDivitt 80-acre farm that stretched from Merle Hay Road on the east, to 66th Street on the west and from Townsend Avenue to Aurora Avenue, north to south.
The 80-acre farmground was given to Maude's father by her grandfather, Isaac McDivitt. It was Maude's great-grandfather, William McDivitt, who gave the land for the McDivitt Cemetery located on Meredith Drive.
Maude had two daughters, Virgil, now deceased , and Marie, a 1948 Urbandale High School graduate and current resident. She is survived by three McDivitt sisters, Bessie Breeden, 92, of Urbandale, Catherine Elings, 79, of Des Moines, and the baby of the McDivitt clan, Dorothy Towers, 77.
Marie McDowell, Maude's daughter, remembers her talking about working at the Olmsted-Urban House during her teen years as a caregiver and babysitter.
Her family and friends remember her as a no-frills, caring, God-fearing person with a love for gardening and flowers. She leaves nine grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.
