Dart enlisted on 14 October 1861, in Tarrant Co. and served under Gen. Earl Van Dorn's command. His courage and convictions were tested in places like Corinth, Pea Ridge and numerous engagements in Oklahoma. All of this at 40 yrs. of age, in a war where the average age of a soldier was 19.
Exactly one year after enlistment, he was discharged because of his age and he walked home from the Indian Territory to the Nacogdoches area where his family had relocated.
No metals, no parades, just a common man having the courage to do what he felt was right.
Taken from the Confederate Marker Dedication Pine Knot Cemetery 16 Nov. 1996
