Sylvia H. Anthony

Sylvia Hensley Anthony, 90, of Elkton, passed away Aug. 27, 2014, at Willow Estates Assisted Living, where she was currently residing.

She was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Elkton to the late Dorsey Wysong Hensley and Sarah (Sally) Margaret Lam Hensley.

She graduated from McGaheysville High School in 1940. On June 27, 1940, she married Weldon Harshbarger Anthony, who preceded her in death on May 3, 1984 after 43 years of marriage. During her married years, she was a homemaker, worked at the Shenandoah Knitting Mill, Ben Franklin 5&10 Store, Scrugg's Department Store and Rockingham Mill in Elkton.

Sylvia started her church life as a child in the Mount Olivet Christian Church of Elkton and then became an active member at the Evangelical United Methodist Church with her husband and daughters. After Weldon's death, she dedicated her life to both church and community activities. In her church, Sylvia served as the Care Ministry Coordinator for 15 years. In the community, she served as a volunteer at E.A.U.S., both Elkton and McGaheysville Volunteer Fire Departments and was a member of Jr. Order Ladies' Auxiliary. She loved growing and arranging flowers and was a three-time president of the Blue Ridge Garden Club and was awarded a lifetime membership to the Virginia Federation Garden Club. Her real passion was in the kitchen: cooking, canning, preserving, baking and then receiving accolades from her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughters, Diana Elizabeth Anthony of Elkton and Sarah Anthony Hillard and husband, Clair, of Gloucester Point, Va.; two grandsons, Robert Lynn Flick of Raphine, Va., and Anthony Scott Hillard and wife, Deborah, of Frisco, Texas; three granddaughters, Kimberly Renee Flick Hagy of Raphine, Va., Staci Elaine Harris Burnett of Staunton, Va., and Shelly Marie Hillard Wambo and husband, Doug, of Richmond, Ind.; eight great-granddaughters, Samantha Wallace, Mari Flick, Kelly Lam, Crystal Lam, Stephanie Hagy, Olivia Wambo, Brooke Hillard and Grace Hillard; three great-grandsons, Colt Hagy, Christopher Lam and Jacob Hagy; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Sylvia is also survived by special friends, Doris Ann and Jimmy Eppard and Lois and Buddy Stanley, and many other loving friends.

A celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton with the Rev. David Vaughan, Pastor Wayne Wright and the Rev. Forrest Collier officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.

Sylvia, who was rarely seen at church without a hat, was a member of Rockin' Red Hatters. In her memory, her daughters and granddaughters will be wearing her hats. We invite anyone to join us in wearing a hat in memory of our beloved mom.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the home of her daughter, Diana, at any time.

Memorial donations may be made to the EAUS, 218 W. Spotswood Ave., Elkton, VA 22827, or the McGaheysville Volunteer Fire Department, 80 Stover Drive, McGaheysville, VA 22840, or the Elkton Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 91, Elkton, VA 22827.
