RABBI BURTON LEVINSON, 84

Rabbi Emeritus Burton E. Levinson, 84, of 621 Avondale Street, West Lafayette, Indiana died at 3:50p.m. Tuesday, January 2, in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center.

He was spiritual leader of Temple Israel in West Lafayette from 1966 until 1982, when he retired and was named rabbi emeritus.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 17, 1911, he graduated from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He had lived in West Lafayette since 1966, coming from Cleveland.

He was first an assistant rabbi in Erie, PA., then a rabbi at Duluth, MN. He joined the Navy as a chaplain in 1944, during World War II. After being discharged he returned to Duluth and later went to Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Cleveland where he served as a rabbi before coming to West Lafayette to serve at Temple Israel.

Rabbi Levinson was a member of the Fairmount Temple educational staff in Cleveland before coming to the Lafayette area. During his tenure as rabbi of Temple Israel, the building at 620 Cumberland Avenue, West Lafayette, was completed.

He was a member of Temple Israel, Rotary Club, B'nai B'rith and the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He was active in the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art. Levinson had served as president of the Tippecanoe County Ministerial Association.

He married Sylvia Hurwitz on March 14, 1937, in Dayton Ohio. She is retired from West Lafayette School Corporation. She taught 6th grade at Burtsfield School.

Surviving with his wafe are two sons, Dr. David Levinson of Petaluma, Calif., and Joel Levinson of Northridge, Calif.

Funeral arrangements are by Soller-Baker Funeral Homes.
