Son of B. Kerr & Mary Margaret Gillis .
Married Maude L. Reid 14 May 1937. They raised five childen. Thomas Ray 1938-2004, Peggy Janett 1941-1980, Larry Frank 1943, Mary Lou 1946-1969 and David Lynn 1950.
Ira had several occupations in his life time. He supported his family as best he could and the times would allow. Being the child of the depression era he was a survivor. He work in road construction with Austin Bridge and Iron, in the Conservation Core, welded in the ship yards in World War II, work in the feed mills in Nacogdoches, did line work for Texas Power and Electric, welded for Atlas Powder Company in Marshall while attending East Texas Baptist College studying for the ministry, he was active in the labor union and credit union while working at Atlas powder, pastored a church while working at Atlas Powder, resigned from Atlas Powder to minister the church, worked in a funeral home after loosing the church, left Marshall to work in the feed mills in Nacogdoches, weld for several different companies and raise chickens.
Married Gay Lilly Birdwell Stanley 20 Feb 1974.
