Daniel Elihue Freeman was born abt 1803 in Buncombe County, NC

The son of Thomas Freeman & Mary Elizabeth Ball


Three of Daniel's brothers, Hiram, Anderson & Green, married three Parker sisters.


On the 25th of March 1825 in North Carolina

Daniel married Margaret Horton. Their children are:

  • -Mary Ann Freeman Ball
  • -Elizabeth Freeman Lowe
  • -Althia Freeman Moore
  • -Benjamin Franklin Freeman
  • -George Washington Freeman
  • -Thomas Jefferson Freeman
  • -David Freeman
  • -Nancy Freeman
  • -Sarah Freeman Goforth


Some of these children must have died because they are not named in the Last Will & Testament of Daniel E Freeman or named in his probate case


On the 1850 census living in Daniel's home are two laborers, Jackson Lowe & Nat Davis both age 22. In 1855 Jackson Lowe married Elizabeth Freeman


Also in the 1850 census not living very far away is Mary Ann Freeman age 23 living with her husband Noah Ball age 25


Margaret Horton, d/o George H Horton & Elizabeth Betsy Goulden Golding. Sometime between 1850 & 1860, Daniel's wife Margaret died and so did his daughter Nancy


Daniel also enlisted to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was later discharged due to diabetes.


At 64 years old Daniel E Freeman married 28-year-old Nancy Patton, a widow, on the 24th of July 1867 in Madison County NC.

Nancy Caroline Swan (1841-1923) d/o Stephen Swan & Francis Pool, Nancy married and was widowed four times to:

  • -David H Patton b 1841 NC d 1863 m 1858 NC
  • -Daniel E Freeman b 1803 NC d 1873 NC m 1867 NC
  • -Jesse Marion Revis b 1849 d bef 1899 m 1873
  • -Jim Warren d bef 1923 m 1918


According to her death certificate, Nancy Warren is buried

in Clark Cemetery in Hartford, Cocke Co., TN but no headstone


In the Last Will and Testament of Daniel E Freeman, he left 75 acres, the house with all the personal property to his wife Nancy, who soon after married husband #3 who then sold the land to D D Lunsford.


The Estate of Daniel E Freeman was in probate from 1873 until 1925 because of those 75 acres left to his wife. Daniel's probate case went on to make case law in North Carolina. Google: FREEMAN vs RAMSEY


Military records show two different persons ordered a headstone to be made and it was to be sent to Jewell Hill Cemetery near Marshall NC


Daniel E Freeman's name is on many records. Daniel appears to have been a Justice of the Peace, Daniel is listed as a bondsman for bastard children. Daniel also held a few positions within the town of Marshall NC
