Melvin is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Jolene Green of Charlottesville; seven children, Deborah Sue Thorsell and her husband, Mark, Phoebe Green Shaia and her husband, Frank, Teresa Green Hall and her husband, Harry, Melvin Keith Green Jr. and his wife, Aileen, Angela Green Mossbarger, Stanislaus Michael Green and his wife, Ann, and Patricia Jolene Green; 17 grandchildren, Kristina Lawrence, Jason Lawrence, Rebekah S. McClung, Matthew Shaia, Heather Johnson, Rachel S. McLellan, Ruth Shaia, Christopher Johnson, Raymond Zwiger, Beverly Zwiger, Katie Mossbarger, Tiffany Green, Jesse Mossbarger, Joshua Green, Whitney Green, Adrianna Green, Savannah Green; and six great-grandchildren, Brandon Lawrence, Shaia McClung, Maia Crum, Saffronia McClung, Justin Lewis, and Raegan McLellan.
Melvin was born in Saratoga, Indiana, on August 24, 1924. He spent his boyhood in Indiana, was a graduate of Modoc High School, and attended Purdue University. He finished his degree at Omaha University during his military service.
Melvin was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He received the Bronze Star with a "V" and 2 stars, Purple Heart, Presidential, Unit Citation with 3 stars, China Service Medal and several other medals. He served in the United States Marine Corps for 24 years, retiring on August 31, 1966, as a Lieutenant Colonel.
In 1968, he moved his family to Orange County, where he provided accounting services in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Greene, Culpeper, and Orange counties and he and his wife owned and operated the Little Fifth Avenue Shop from 1968 until 1985. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Orange square dance club, and was a member of Holy Comforter Catholic Church in Charlottesville. He had been an avid member of St. John's Catholic Church in Orange prior to moving to Charlottesville. His two passions were cattle farming and encouraging others to continue to pursue a higher education.
Melvin encouraged many along the path of life and was a good and trusted friend to many. He was a man of honesty, integrity, and truthfulness. While sometimes he was stern, he had a tender heart. His strength, wisdom, and counsel will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A. funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009, at St. Isadore the Farmer Catholic Church. Burial will take place at the National Cemetery at Quantico Marine Base, in Quantico, Virginia, 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2009. At his request, pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Preddy's Funeral Home in Orange.
Preddy's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers., the family requests that contributions may be made to St. Isadore the Farmer Catholic Church Building Fund, Hospice of the Piedmont, or a charity of their choice, in memory of Melvin Green.
