Per the 1900 Census for Washington, District of Columbia, they were the parents of five children with five living.
She attended the wounded during the Civil War.

Washington December 29. Mrs. Catherine M. Varela, sister of the late bandmaster, John Phillip Sousa and widow of Alexander C. Varela, died here yesterday at the home of her son, Osmund L. Varela in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She was born in Brooklyn, New York and with the exception of six years spent in California she lived in Washington since she was two years old. Another son, Edmund A. Varela of Washington and a sister, Mrs. James McK. Bower of Chicago also survive.
