Mamie Wood Jackson, 93, a lifelong resident of the Wake Forest Community in Albemarle County departed this life on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was the widow of Festus C. Jackson Sr.

Mamie was born October 15, 1914, to the late Isaac C. and Bessie Jones Wood. She was preceded in death by a son, Festus C. Jackson Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth Pollard; and three brothers, Lloyd Wood, Willie Wood, and Isaac C. Wood.

Mamie attended Albemarle County public schools. She was baptized at an early age at the Wake Forest Baptist church and later became a member of Zion Union Baptist Church where she served for many years on the Deaconess Board and Senior Choir. In later years, she became active in Wake Forest Baptist Church as a watch care member. She was a member of the Eastern Star Hope Chapter # 12.

Mamie is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Watkins of Charlottesville and Elizabeth Wynter and her husband, Exton, of Baldwin New York, and a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Jackson of Charlottesville. Grandchildren include Larry Jackson of Charlottesville, Glenda Best and her husband, Martin Jr., of Palmyra, Gayle Wood of Charlottesville, Amorel Cunningham and her husband, Troy, of Somerset, New Jersey, Jennifer Leslie and her husband, Mario, of West Palm Beach, Florida, Colton Wynter and his wife, Karen, of Hempstead, New York, and Claudia Warlick and her husband, Stephen, of Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2008, at Zion Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Lloyd Cosby officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
