GEORGE LAKE CLAYTON, 84, of Inman Route 3, died at the home of his son JAKE CLAYTON at 8:30 p.m. Saturday after 14 months of declining health. Mr. CLAYTON was the son of the late JOHN GOWAN and SARAH BARNETT CLAYTON and was a life long resident of Holly Springs community.
He was a retired farmer and pioneer peach grower. He was a member of the Holly Springs Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class, and was a past deacon.
He was twice married, first to the late EMMA GRICE CLAYTON, who died in 1948. From this marriage the following children survive: one daughter, Mrs. ERNEST FARLEY of Hampton, VA; seven sons, RALPH and RANDAL, both of Inman, JAKE, A. W. and O. J. CLAYTON of Campobello Route 2, and M. E. and LEWIS J. CLAYTON of Lyman.
His second marriage was to LUCY ELDRIDGE GRICE CLAYTON of the home, who survives; three step-daughters, Mrs. JEANETTE JACKSON, Mrs. AVA RUSSELL and Mrs. LENA JACKSON, all of Newport, TN; three step-sons, W. C. and B. F. GRICE of Newport, and JAMES GRICE of Cleveland, Ohio. Also surviving one sister, Mrs. JANE BARNETT of Campobello Route 2; 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Wood Mortuary, Greer.
Mr. Clayton founded Clayton Pottery about 1912. His son Oliver Jones "Pete" Clayton became a potter in his father's business, while his three brothers worked digging the clay, hauling, glazing, and finally firing the wares in the kiln. The Clayton Pottery has left a rich legacy of churns, jars, pitchers and other pieces for generations to admire, use and collect.
