Annie was the third of nine children born to Civil War veteran Henry Mathiet Hayden, and his wife, Flora B. Mherling Hayden. Annie's father was a farmer and potterer, and served in the 14th Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry, (159th Volunteers) in the Civil War. Annie's mother was at one time a postmaster in Preston County, W.Va.

Annie was descendant, through her father, of Mayflower passengers John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. She was raised on her family's farm in Preston County, W.Va., and married Clinton D. Feather, of Albright, W.Va., on March 13, 1892, at her father's home.

The couple lived on a sizable farm in the "Crab Orchard" community near Martin Dale, W.Va., in Preston County, and had two children, Karl and Helen. Annie was a teacher in addition to managing the family farm.

On May 12, 1932, her husband was fatally shot by a group of unknown men outside the family's home during an attempted robbery. He died in Kingwood, W.Va., nearly two days later. Despite publicity surrounding the case and editorials calling out the "weak" law in the local Preston County (WV) Journal, the assailants remained at large, and the murder remains unsolved. Following the murder, Annie moved to Los Angeles County, California, where she died in 1964, and is buried alongside her daughter.
