SANFORD - John William Westmoreland Jr., 91, of Sanford, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Pinelake Health and Rehab. Center in Carthage.

Mr. Westmoreland was born in Stokes County, NC on August 13, 1917, to the late John William Westmoreland Sr. and Laura Jane Westmoreland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Roger, Reuben, Jim and Jack Westmoreland and one sister, Pauline West-moreland.

He was a faithful member of Flat Springs Baptist Church for many years and has now gone to his new place he would call home. He was a loving husband and the best father anyone could have asked for.

You could always count on him. He worked for many years at Mann Implement Company as a farm equipment mainte-Westmoreland nance mechanic after which he worked and retired from Whitin-Roberts in 1982 as a maintenance mechanic. Known by all, he could repair most any equipment, tractor or lawn mower.

He is survived by his wife, Viola Womble West-moreland of the home and two daughters, Diane W. Moore and husband, Drew of Sanford, Brenda W. Thompson and husband, Terry of Sanford; grandchildren, Susan Liane Thomas Cochrane and husband, Jack, Laura Leigh Thomas and Charlton Richardson, Tina Thompson Rojas and husband, Eli, Kelli Thompson Alford and husband, Lance, Brian Thompson and wife, Aimee; great-grandchildren, Kelcie Vann, Jacie Cochrane, Chase Erford, Shane Lawrence, Olivia and Nicolette Rojas, Taylor and Madee Pokemire, Joy Alford; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Flat Springs Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be at Flat Springs Baptist Church on Friday, April 17, 2009, at 4 p.m. with the Dr. Gary McCollough presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
